Getting Your Outdoor Space Summer Ready

When spring arrives and the days grow longer, the last thing you want to do is clean. Yet after winter your outdoor space usually isn’t fit for you to enjoy let alone to entertain in.

The BBQ requires scrubbing, the yard should be raked and the deck or patio could do with clearing of winter debris and washing. The patio chairs and table that you carefully stored away in the garage or shed last year beg a thorough wipe down.

Instead of dragging cleaning products from your cupboard to confront these tasks, why not use one dependable tool to get the job done?

Just like your indoor space, steam cleaning works wonders on outdoor surfaces too, making them like new again. BBQs, patios, decks, chairs, your patio umbrella and table, and even some outdoor planters can all benefit from steam that uses pure water instead of harmful chemicals.

Quality canister type or hand held steamers come with several accessories so you can handle several outdoor cleaning tasks with ease. These top models have bent nozzles for those hard-to-reach places, offering a constant high volume steam flow and adjustable pressure control. Both canister and hand held steamers come with a nylon brush for tackling grease and food particles typically found on a BBQ grill.

“I just take the nozzle off my machine—attach the stiff brush to the end of it—and scrub the grill thoroughly,” says Jennifer of the Steam Cleaners Review website. “The heat from the steam melts the grease and then all I have to do is to take a paper towel and wipe it clean. My grill has never been cleaner.”

Before you begin to steam clean your patio or deck, remove any furniture, including planters and appliances. Give your deck area a thorough sweeping to get rid of fallen branches, leaves, and dirt. A power washer or garden hose will make short work of remaining debris and ready the area for steaming.

Steam penetrates surfaces and draws out dirt that’s been embedded in there over the winter. Go over your deck or patio one section at a time, applying steam pressure to the gaps and corners where dirt and dust collect. Not only is steaming better for you, your family, and for your garden—home to many plants and birds—steam’s also more affordable, effective, and easier to use.

Allow your outdoor surface to dry fully before adding back your garden furniture and backyard appliances. Once you’ve arranged your outdoor items the way you want them, take stock of what you have and what you’d like to add this year to make your outdoor space extra inviting, such as colorful cushions, a hammock or outdoor lights.

Jennifer B. of Havenly Online Interior Design strongly recommends plants to liven up your patio space. “Whether you use your outdoor space as a reading nook or entertaining area, decorating with plants is an ideal way to bring life to your summer experience.”
